The garden

This native garden is comprised of two very large bush gardens and a number of smaller gardens near the house sheltered by some wonderful stone walls built by Don. The bush gardens are bordered by a sleeper edging and have a sand mulch, which has been shown to be beneficial to growing a wide variety of smaller native plants particularly Correas and Eremophilas. The shrub understorey and border is dominated by the Correa collection. Only the smaller plants near the garden border get watered regularly. The larger shrubs rely on rainfall or supplementary watering during long dry spells. The Eucalyptus canopy is providing a leaf mould mulch which will break down into plant nutrients. The whole system should be as sustainable as possible. A variety of watering points such as ponds, bird baths and bowls provide water for the many small birds which feast on the Correa flowers.

She has over 30 years experience of growing frost and drought hardy Australian native plants and is a regular speaker at Garden Club events in the Region and at Native Plant conferences. She is author of 'Wattle', co-author of 'Australian Plants for the Northern Tablelands of NSW', has written two editions of 'Australian Plants' (Correas and Wattles) and is author of the book on Australian Correas, to be released in mid 2010.
